The Story of Silsila Studio

Born from Mom's saris

My mom's closet was my favorite place to 'shop,' looking for something new among the saris that she's collected over her life: one that she wore for her engagement, one that she took from her older sister, one that was a gift from my Dadi.

As a teenager, I loved wearing her vintage saris while giving them a cool, modern edge with a sleek blouse or a different drape.

These days I rarely wear saris, and I've noticed that the women around me have also stopped reaching for their saris on special occasions. But I still long to wear that legacy, to put on something that has a story and beloved meaning, something that is so high quality it's been worn for a generation and still has life to give.

The thought of all those beautiful saris sitting in closets, leaving yards of pure silk and chiffon folded away with no one wearing them left me wanting to offer a different way to preserve these pieces. Not tucked away but out in the world. Reimagined, restyled, reclaimed.

So, with Mom's permission, I took one of her red printed saris and designed a set that breathed new life into that fabric, creating a one-of-a-kind modern heirloom, and the Silsila concept: heritage honored and proudly carried forward as something new.
